Formula used

Impression eCPM = estimated earnings ÷ ad impressions × 1,000

Worked example

If a report shows $250 in estimated earnings across 50,000 ad impressions, impression eCPM is $5.00. That is a historical ratio for the selected report—not a guaranteed price for future impressions.

What this number measures

Impression eCPM expresses estimated earnings per thousand ad impressions. It normalizes earnings for impression volume, which makes two periods with different impression counts easier to compare when their report definitions match.

Worked example

Suppose Period A records 40,000 ad impressions and $180 of estimated earnings. Its impression eCPM is ($180 ÷ 40,000) × 1,000 = $4.50. Period B records 55,000 impressions and $220 of earnings, so eCPM is $4.00. Period B earned more in total while earning less per thousand impressions. Both observations can be true at once.

Keep the denominator consistent

Do not compare impression eCPM directly with page RPM as if they were the same metric. Page RPM uses pageviews as its denominator; impression RPM uses ad impressions. A single page can generate multiple ad impressions, and reporting systems may distinguish requested, matched, served, rendered or counted impressions. Confirm the metric label in the platform you exported from.

What eCPM cannot tell you alone

A change may reflect geography, device mix, ad format, demand, consent signals, viewability, traffic sources, page mix, reporting adjustments or a change in the report’s filters. The ratio cannot identify the cause. Segment the report into comparable groups and confirm the date window before drawing conclusions.

Practical comparison checklist

  • Use the same earnings definition and currency.
  • Use ad impressions—not pageviews—in this formula.
  • Compare equivalent time windows and property filters.
  • Review total impressions and earnings alongside the ratio.
  • Do not infer that a higher eCPM necessarily means a better user experience.

Google’s help documentation defines ad RPM using estimated earnings divided by ad impressions, multiplied by 1,000. Different products can expose different eCPM variants, so follow the definition for the exact report you are reading.

Frequently asked questions

Is eCPM the same as page RPM?

No. Page RPM divides earnings by pageviews. Impression-based eCPM or ad RPM divides earnings by ad impressions.

Can I use this to predict tomorrow’s earnings?

No. It summarizes a selected report. Future results depend on traffic, ad demand, setup, audience mix and other factors.

What if my report has zero impressions?

The calculator requires a positive impression count because division by zero does not produce a meaningful eCPM.
